“Physical Theatre Workshop” – Angie Settlemire

$35/all 3; $12/class (May sign up for each class individually, but encouraged to attend all 3) Ages: 8 to 16 Max. 20 students   May 4, May 11, May 18

Note: Parents are invited to come to the last 15 minutes of the third workshop to see the presentation of the pieces learned.   While not ideal, if a student is unable to attend all three workshops, they will be integrated into the presentation in whatever ways possible.

 Class 1: Props and Illusions

This class will explore the world of mime illusion and prop manipulation. Using engaging games and activities, students will learn how to interact with both tangible and invisible objects. Not only will we learn classics like “the wall,” but we will even discover how to create our own illusions. Students will also learn how to reimagine uses for props and methods for manipulation, such as giving them a life of their own. We will create a short exploratory piece to present at the end of the third workshop.

Class 2: Statues and Stories

This class will explore the concept of using physical imagery to tell a story, using the human body as the canvas for artistic expression. Students will learn the basics of constructing powerful group statues and experiment with different ways of presentation and transition – including using background music, silence, and narrated story. We will learn a statue based story performance to present at the end of the third workshop, and integrate it with the exploratory illusion piece.

Class 3: Rhythms: Emotions and Environments

This class will explore how to use rhythms to portray emotions and establish environments. Through various improvisational exercises, games, and application of technique, students will learn how to clearly communicate these to an audience without using words. We will create a piece to incorporate with the rest of the presentation.
